About
Building a 21st-century blue economy
Our mission is to catalyze solutions to global ocean challenges by creating, scaling, and investing in innovative blue economy companies.
In 2019, Gulf of Maine Research Institute created Gulf of Maine Ventures, the entrepreneurship and innovation arm of the organization, as the next critical step in operationalizing GMRI’s capacities and expertise for sustained and scalable impact. Over the past 25+ years, GMRI has developed a wealth of institutional knowledge, intellectual capital, research labs, data sets and a vast network of relationships. These assets are key pillars on which to build a first-of-its kind “bottoms-up” venture creation and investment capacity.
Building strong partnerships.
Building strong regional partnerships around blue economy innovation continues to be a core strategy for us, and we are pleased with our growing relationships with peer institutions to explore potential joint-venture opportunities for innovation and commercialization.
- GMRI Network: We leverage institutional relationships with other academic and research institutions, as well as government agencies and corporate partners to identify and support portfolio companies.
- Commercialization Platform: We serve partner institutions as the primary commercialization platform for our collective blue economy work in the Gulf of Maine.
- Our Niche: We provide the resources and access needed for early-stage start-ups to scale and succeed.
